Sagre are celebrations that take place to honor certain foods or regional customs.
Sagre are a lot of fun to experience and a great way to witness a truly Italian holiday with deep cultural roots. Sagre can be found throughout Italy, from the smallest communities to the largest metropolis. Large tables are set up in the piazzas or squares, and everyone gathers to celebrate the meal by dining and drinking as a single extended family.
When you arrive, you'll find people dancing, enjoying live music, watching children play, and stopping by stalls offering local products. There is enough excellent cuisine. People can really get close to each other during the sagre.
In Italy, there can be sagre for practically any cuisine, but some examples include: artichoke, pumpkin, truffle, porchetta, seafood, porcini. This is a celebration of the food being prepared for the season because Italians traditionally only consume food when it is in season.
