Where is Italy?

Positioned in southern Europe, Italy is a distinctive land shaped like a high-heel boot. It is surrounded by the Adriatic Sea to the east and the Ionian Sea to the south, with its northern part bordering France, Switzerland, Austria, and Slovenia, which have influenced the cultures of those regions. The southern part of Italy is in proximity to Greece, Albania, and northern Africa, which have also made significant contributions to its heritage. The islands of Sicily and Sardinia boast some of Europe's finest beaches, while smaller islands are scattered along the coasts of Tuscany, Campania, Puglia, and Sicily. With 4,720 miles of coastline, Italy offers ample opportunities to find a beautiful spot by the sea.

Covering an area of approximately 116,305 square miles, Italy is roughly the same size as California. It is home to the majestic Alps and rugged Dolomites in the north, as well as inland lakes such as Como, Maggiore, Iseo, and Garda. The country also features three active volcanoes: Etna, Stromboli, and Vesuvius. The Po River valley constitutes the largest plain in Italy, while only 20% of the country is flat. Rolling hills and mountains dominate the landscape, with the Apennines stretching for 750 miles from north to south, dividing the country.

The mere mention of Italy evokes a sense of longing in many people who dream of experiencing its fabled bella vita and visiting its famous landmarks. Italy boasts some of the world's most renowned monuments, celebrated art, and exquisite cuisine. Italy as a nation did not come into existence until 1861 when various regional states and kingdoms were unified. Due to its long history of diverse rulers, invaders, and influences, the country exhibits great variety and distinct cultures from one region to another. This results in variations in history, architecture, dialects, cuisine, and culture across different parts of the country.
