The natural disasters most likely to occur in Italy are earthquakes, forest fires, and floods.
Earthquakes are very common, but we are speaking about minor tremors in major cities that are located on seismic faults.
Forest fires are also common in the peninsula. However, they are easily managed. For this reason it is recommended to always be alert, especially when you decide to travel in the summer season to destinations such as the countryside or islands off the coast.
Finally, floods mostly affect cities such as Venice. When canals flood the city streets, it is called "acqua alta," or high water level. Therefore, it is advisable to be in possession of travel insurance, especially to meet expenses, including hotel expenses.
In Italy, the department that deals with natural disasters is called the "Civil Protection Department." To keep up to date with the latest news, you can always check their official website https://www.protezionecivile.gov.it/en/. Daily, assessments of possible risks are published at 4 p.m. These are then classified according to three colors: yellow for low risk, orange for medium risk, and red for high risk.
