If you have your own car and would like some suggestions on where else worth visiting while staying in Naples-area hotels or resorts for one more night before continuing onto Rome- read below:
This list goes beyond Pompeii itself because it includes many other sites that are seamlessly integrated into this historic town's attractions including Mount Vesuvius which towers over everything here plus all sorts of neighborhood scenes from Roman times such as Herculaneum (also thankfully preserved)
The ancient city of Pompeii is only 30 minutes from Naples and can be reached by taking the Circumvesuviana train. You don't need to worry about seat reservations because there are no schedules for this line - just buy your tickets (2 euros per person) at any station; or, if you prefer taking the bus, you have to reach Nuova Marina port where the bus station is. Here buses for Pompeii (35 minutes-ride) leave any hour for 2.80 euros each. Enjoy looking out the window while traveling through neighborhoods filled with Italian culture!
The station you should get off at is "Pompei Scavi" which can be found 50 meters from the main entrance of the site. If you are driving a car, you can reach the ruins of Pompeii by Autostrada A3. This sometimes can involve dealing with traffic, for this reason, you'll have more fun if instead you book two-way tickets for any tours that run between these two places!
The ruins of Pompeii are a spiritual experience because, if you close your eyes and ears to all that is around for just one moment, it almost feels as though nothing has changed at all. You can still hear the merchants selling their products behind closed doors or girls inviting sailors into exclusive brothels where they will be entertained until morning as if Mount Vesuvius never woke up from its eternal sleep after being dormant since A.D..79! We strongly recommend seeing the Forum and Amphitheater, but don't forget to also visit some ancient ruins. The House of Faun is a modern residence with shops inside that includes an open-air restaurant where you can enjoy your meal. And if you have some extra time, then go ahead and explore Mystery Valley which holds many funerary temples dedicated entirely towards...? You guessed it: mysteries!!
The food of Pompeii is some seriously delicious, but don't just take my word for it! You can try a sfogliatella - an old classic from the Neapolitan tradition that tastes like heaven with its ricotta cheese and candied citrus peel flavors. Or maybe you'd prefer pizza Margherita or even babbà-a type of Italian bread soaked in limoncello before being topped off by regular ice cream. If there are local restaurants hosting tasting experiences near where you're staying then make sure to take part - and sure, you can eat what you will prepare!
