10 Travel Trends for 2021

The year 2020 is definitely a historic year! The economy of the tourism sector with all its professionals has been the most affected by the border closure. We look forward to being able to depart to a destination that is not home and bring 2021 to life with trends that will hopefully explode in this sector.

We present the trends assessed for 2021 by tourism professionals and researchers

Having fun in safety

The fear that has characterized this period will not vanish overnight especially in the countries that have suffered the most restrictions during this global pandemic, such as China, India, South Korea, etc... Travelers in 2021 will definitely pay special attention to hygiene and social distances. This is precisely why operators will have to find innovative solutions that can maintain high levels of safety, hygiene and at the same time entertain their customers. On the other hand, countries with fewer restrictions will not be overly concerned about security protocol unless they visit the countries mentioned above!

 Last minute bookings

Source: Skyscanner , 2020

Reports from Skyscanner, Tripadvisor and Expedia show a a trend in last minute booking, with a window ranging from 7 to 30 days and mainly in the first 6 months of 2020. Mostly at the beginning of the block and during the summer.

 Proximity tourism

Source: TripAdvisor White Paper, November 2020

Proximity tourism is likely to be the end of 2021, as days and capital spent on vacations will be reduced, the economy will not improve overnight. More than half of travelers are expected to opt for short vacations in 2021. Because they are unsure of the freedom they will be given to travel around the world, they may reduce the risk of last-minute ticket cancellations by traveling to nearby areas. Airbnb has launched a campaign to support domestic travel and local economic growth. This will have an impact not only on Italy, but certainly globally.

 Preferences for outdoor activities

Outdoor tourism is the best example of an activity that can be done safely. Most Italians chose outdoor tourism during this period.

Everyone is trying to continue their normal activities, but the intention to go on vacation is clearly lower than a year ago. On the other hand, we can say that the intention to choose an outdoor vacation in a road trip, village or camping has increased more than last year and will grow again during 2021.

 Remote getaways

2021 will be a year of social getaways for travelers, who will choose "private" destinations such as the mountains or the countryside with a select list of people rather than casual tourists as usual.

 Online Travel

Travel is one of the most publicized trends in social engineering. As we all know, tourists document their trips with pictures and videos on social media, and this can be used as a strong tool to develop tourism worldwide. Can people also travel from home? This is the challenge that Italian guides, escorts, tour operators, and even international companies such as Amazon (with the Amazon Explore project) and Airbnb (with online experiences) are facing to offer their users online travel experiences.

myTour does not believe that online activities can be a risk for tour operators, we believe that such initiatives can only further increase the desire to really experience the sensations seen from home.

 Support for local communities

By supporting domestic tourism and the local economy as much as possible, travelers support communities that suffered losses during this period by helping them get back on their feet for the coming year,

 One way tickets

With all the changes experienced in 2020 during the interruption and chaos, professionals seem to be getting along better and better with smart working. Working remotely has been very common, using video conferencing tools and webinars. This has apparently reduced work travel promotions, since it is mainly done remotely. Workers can now choose workstations, rather than from home opt for a different location so as to increase their skills and motivation to work.

During the "first wave," Skyscanner noted an increase in searches for one-way or one-way flights. People have in a sense chosen where to spend the upcoming lockdown.

Relaxing activities

To maintain peace of mind along with the body, tourists will look forward to relaxing activities such as yoga, meditation, mountain walks, etc., Which will be a growing trend in 2021.

Sustainability of tourism

The tourism crisis will not end immediately, one "positive" thing about this moment is the interruption of tourist overcrowding, which will give time for all art cities to recover from the flow in past years and make it more sustainable.

According to Booking.com:

  • About half of tourists want sustainable travel
  • Most tourists expect sustainable travel options

The tourism industry is looking forward to:

  • Offer attractive travel packages
  • Offer different alternatives to prevent overcrowding
  • Help the community recover.

We will return to travel

We are confident that the world will resume traveling, probably in a different way, and that is precisely why we must prepare for innovative trends and unexpected but necessary changes to return to "normal" life.

Human beings have an innate desire to discover new worlds, new cultures, to feel a bit like citizens of the world, despite the difficulties of 2020 this feeling has not faded. Let us not forget that beyond the assumed scenarios or market trends we all agree that 2021 will be characterized by an irrepressible desire to return to a normal life. We hope that the future will bring good surprises and fulfill your plans for 2021.

Best wishes from the myTour team!
