Guided tour of Siena Cathedral on the occasion of the extraordinary uncovering of the floor
The marble floor of Siena Cathedral is the result of work accomplished through the centuries, from the 14th to the 19th century, by leading Sienese painters and sculptors, with the exception of the Umbrian master Pinturicchio.
"The most beautiful, great and magnificent that had ever been made," is how Vasari described the marvelous 56 inlays that cover the vast surface of Siena Cathedral. Made with the technique of graffito and marble commesso, the tarsias take the visitor on a journey ranging from the themes of classical and pagan antiquity, to Wisdom, the history of the Jewish people and Salvation through Christ, constantly evoked in the floor and never represented.
