The secrets behind the Trevi Fountain

The Trevi Fountain is located in the very Rome historic center. This area is full of political and institutional buildings, hosting the most important Italian governmental and parliamentary institutions. Despite that, the Trevi Fountain is a calm and romantic area where you can enjoy one of the best glasses of wine in your life. Being inside a scenario that has been eternalized by postcards and famous movies. Do you remember La Dolce Vita, the movie directed by Federico Fellini in 1960? One of the most suggestive scenes has been shot inside the Trevi Fountain. When Anita Ekberg called Marcello Mastroianni and asked him “Marcello, Come here! Hurry Up!”, she’s bathing inside the Trevi fountain!

The history of the Trevi Fountain

Once, the old version of the fountain was the core element of the eternal city's waterworks. Romans built it to grant people access to a high-quality water source. Marco Agrippa, the son-in-law of Emperor Augustus, positioned it while designing the Virgo aqueduct, capturing pure springs from the Aniene river. The fountain was and is still is located at the intersection of three streets. Hence the name "Trevi". The actual fountain construction dates back to the 18th century when Pope Clement XII decided to give to the city a monumental fountain. He announced a public competition, won by the French architect Lambert-Sigisbert Adam. Then, he decided to give the job to an Italian architect, Nicola Salvi, who spent more than 30 years to complete the artwork. The result, as you will see with your own eyes, is stunning. This masterpiece is one of the richest examples of the Roman Baroque. Many are the artists that worked on it, creating the statues, the rocks, the complex decorations, representing 30 species of plants, including grapes, figs, ivy, reeds, and some animals like snails and lizards.
