The beautiful cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore is located in the heart of Florence. The whole area is pedestrianised and can be reached easily and quietly. Santa Maria del Fiore is one of the most visited places in Europe and definitely a must-see during your stay in Florence.

Santa Maria del Fiore: a brief history

The initial construction process of the church dates back to the late Middle Ages. The architect and town planner Arnolfo Di Cambio began planning it in 1296. After him, many others, such as Giotto, Francesco Talenti and Giovanni di Lapo Ghini, continued the enterprise. Then it was all finished during the Renaissance, in 1434, when Filippo Brunelleschi completed the impressive dome, called ‘il cupolone’ by the Florentines.
