What to see in Siena
Our trip will start from Florence in the early morning. After an hour we’ll reach Siena. Here you will have a guided walking tour so that you will not get lost in the small and winding alleys. While being doubtful about what to visit in Siena you’ll certainly appreciate the itinerary created by My Tour expert guides.
In a few minutes, we’ll reach Piazza del Campo, the place where the Palio horse race takes place every year during July and August. Being here in the first hours of the morning is something that can’t be described properly through words. The morning light touches gently the thousands of bricks in the Piazza del Campo. The warm pink, red and orange lights contrast with the white marbles of the civic palace building. Highest of all, the Torre del Mangia stands out. This tower takes its name from its first guardian, Giovanni di Balduccio, whose nickname was "Mangia" (“The Eater”). The tower contains the town hall clock. When in 1347 the Siena city council gave him the important assignment of beating the hours, he failed. He was a prodigal, so he preferred going around the town to eat and drink. But in this way, Senese people did not hear any bell sound alerting them about the exact time. That is why "the Eater" was replaced with an automaton whose remains are still kept inside the Cortile del Podestà.
The excursion will continue to another important building in Siena. Reaching Piazza del Duomo you will see Santa Maria Assunta beautiful facade. This cathedral is a real jewel for many reasons. Finished in 1179, it symbolizes one of the greatest examples of the Italian Romanesque-Gothic style. Its facade offers polychrome white and green marbles. Furthermore, tiny and precious sculptures stand out there, making the whole external surface a treasure that you will never finish to discover.
After the Senese dome, you will have free time. Then, at the end of the morning, the Tuscany tour will take care of your appetite. We will take you to visit a winery located midway between Siena and San Gimignano. Spending your lunchtime in a true winery-restaurant will be an unforgettable experience. Here they have a wide representation of the best white and red Tuscan wines. Of course, we will enjoy every single glass of wine tasting Tuscan delicacies. Here you can see the menu:
- Starter: bruschetta, salami, and fresh cheese
- Main dish: tagliatelle (fresh pasta) with ragù sauce, or, upon request with tomato sauce
- Dessert: Italian seasonal sweeties
- Drinks: wine and water included in the price
Do not ask yourself if San Gimignano is worth visiting
After lunch, we’ll be on the road again. We’ll pass by the beautiful Chianti Classico landscape and in less than an hour, we will reach San Gimignano. Any Tuscany tour can’t be really satisfied if you don’t have the possibility to visit this town. San Gimignano stands out amongst the other well-preserved sites from the Middle Age. The reasons are many. Here you can really feel like being a time traveler. The ancient town walls are solid and can be visited with easiness a walking tour. Then we have the towers. 13 towers of the 70 originally built are still visible and define the San Gimignano skyline even from miles away. Nowadays UNESCO is protecting the whole Medieval town, declared World Heritage Site during the ‘90.
During our stay in San Gimignano, you will have free time to visit Piazza della Cisterna, Piazza del Duomo and the surrounding scenario. The old city center is famous for its museums, art galleries and for the shops selling pastries and ice-cream. Yes, it’s true. Despite being in a small town, here you can taste some of the best gelato in Italy.
You can’t leave Tuscany without a view of the leaning tower of Pisa
During the afternoon we will get again on the bus, enjoying the panoramic roads of the Chianti region. Our last stop will be Piazza dei Miracoli in Pisa. This is the place to be to get the best at the end of a day like this. The powerful colors of the sun in the late afternoon enlight the Miracles Square, where the Pisa tower stands out leaning. This is a unique place. The Baptistery, the Cathedral and, of course, the famous leaning Tower are all built using the finest white marble coming from the Apuan Alps. Those mountains are in the Northern Part of the Tuscany region. They are the ones Michelangelo took his marble from to create his famous sculptures.
While being here you will have free time to visit the whole area on your own easily. Finally, we will reach the cars and return to Florence where the tour will end. Otherwise stop to sleep in Pisa, at your disposal all our advice on where to sleep or where to have dinner.
