Full Description

Visit the museum that hosts archaeological finds and the origins of Tuscan culture.

As you walk through the spacious and contemporary-styled halls of MAF, the National Archaeological Museum in Florence, you will hardly recognize that it is listed between the oldest museums in Italy. The original National Archaeological Museum, which was housed in the same area as the "Cenacolo di Foligno" in via Faenza, was inaugurated by King Vittorio Emanuele II on March 12, 1871.

The National Archaeological Museum of Florence housed in the Palazzo della Crocetta contains one of the most complete collections of Italian archeology. Divided into various thematic areas, it gives the opportunity to admire an impressive Egyptian collection composed of sarcophagi, sculptures and hieroglyphics as well as a vast variety of objects and tools from the everyday life of the ancient Egyptian people.

Another thematic area makes it possible to admire and become aware of Etruscan life where the Sarcophagus of the Amazons and the Sarcophagus of the Obese are well In the subsequent thematic room, there are life-size bronzes depicting the well-known mythological figure of the Arringatore.

The museum collects the best of the excavations of all of Tuscany, but also finds from Lazio and Umbria, with very important Etruscan and Roman finds, and collections related to other civilizations, such as an important Egyptian section and one of the Greek vases, many of which were found in Etruscan tombs, bearing witness to the numerous trade exchanges in the Mediterranean.

Continuing the walk in the following corridors you can admire other objects from the

  • Greek era.
  • Etruscan Artifacts
  • Necropolis Garden
  • Roman Artifacts
  • Greek Artifacts
  • Egyptian Artifacts

In a city that is well known for its Renaissance artwork and Medieval architecture, it is hard to imagine that there were so many other histories that surrounded the area in early times, considering Florence was then born as a Roman settlement.

This museum connects the past of Florence, Tuscany and goes beyond to display some of the marvels of ancient Egypt. It is historically suited for families with kids on a rainy day when you need something to capture their imagination. Enjoy your time exploring the past at the National Archaeological Museum of Florence!
