Full Description

Join a 3-hour walking tour of Assisi, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000, with its historic centre, the Basilica of St Francis and other Franciscan sites. You will admire the wonderful Basilica of Saint Francis, Saint Ruffino’s Cathedral, and Saint Claire’s Basilica, as well as the lively main city square-PIAZZA DEL COMUNE

In just 3 hours you can discover the charming town of Assisi, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with its historic centre, the Basilica of San Francesco and other Franciscan sites. Start the tour at 10:30 a.m. by visiting the amphitheatre and its ancient Roman ruins, reused in the Middle Ages as a stone quarry to build local houses and later converted into a private quarter. From here you will be captivated by the view of the medieval Rocca Maggiore castle, one of the best in the city, whose fortified structure dates from 1173-1174. Through narrow alleys and medieval squares, you will come across one of the finest examples of Roman art, the façade of the Cathedral of San Rufino, dedicated to the city's first bishop. The interior, restored in the 16th century, preserves the baptismal font in which St Clare, St Francis and, according to tradition, Frederick II of Swabia were baptised. You will continue your walk, finding yourself in the 19th-century Piazza Santa Chiara, where you can admire the homonym Basilica and enjoy the suggestive view of the Umbrian valley. From there, you will reach Piazza del Comune, the city's main square. In the square, you will find yourself in front of the Roman temple of Minerva, surrounded by imposing medieval government buildings, it is recognised as one of the best preserved in Italy. Continuing on, the tour will head to the Basilica of San Francesco, world-famous for its 13th-14th century frescoes painted by Giotto and many of Italy's finest painters of the period. Visit Assisi with us and explore with an expert guide the history, traditions, and art of one of Italy's most famous Umbrian towns.
