This palace is one of Florence's largest architectural monuments and probably even in a larger area. The original palace was built back in 1457 for the Pitti family. It was designed by Filippo Brunelleschi and built by Luca Fancelli who was his pupil. The original construction was the middle cube of the present building. In 1549, the property became the primary residence of the grand ducal family. The palace was then enlarged; from 1560, Bartolomeo Ammannati also designed and added the grandiose courtyard and two lateral wings. The original building, formed by two floors and the ground floors, it was purchased in 1550 by Eleonora da Toledo, the wife of the Grand Duke Cosimo I de' Medici, thus becoming the official residence of the family.

Excellent tour, highly recommended! I highly recommend the guided tour. Before the tour I knew a little about the Medici family bankers and some of their influence on the arts and sciences. I had no idea how extensive it actually was. And, their influence in the Roman Catholic Church.

Fabulous artwork in a magnificent building with beautiful terraced gardens behind the palace.A visit to the Pitti Palace in Florence also offers a more material experience of aristocracy with exhibits like the Porcelain Museum, Treasury of the Grand Dukes and the Museum of Costume and Fashion for an in-depth look into the possessions and daily indulgences of the ruling class. Directly behind Pitti Palace are the marvellous Boboli Gardens. The Medici family established the layout of the gardens, creating the Italian garden style that would become a model for many European courts. The vast green expanse with a regular layout is a real outdoor museum, populated by ancient and Renaissance statues.
