If you are a fan of architecture and culinary traditions, don't miss this chance to visit one of Bologna's most famous buildings: the Archiginnasio
Are you curious to discover the art and culture that characterise the city of Bologna? Then come and visit us in Emilia-Romagna, where one of the most emblematic and important historical buildings in the Bologna area awaits you: the Archiginnasio of Bologna. Historically, the building was the seat of one of the oldest universities in Italy, and not only that, in the world. Today, however, it is home to the Archiginnasio Municipal Library, the largest in the region. In the library you can find historically and culturally relevant texts, ranging from the humanities to the sciences. If you are interested in learning more about Italian culture, this is the perfect place for you!
Architecturally, the Archiginnasio has two floors with a front porch and courtyard.
The building's façade, designed by Antonio Morandi, is an example of Bologna's character.
The courtyard, with its double loggia, forms the core of the structure. Decorated with coats of arms and painted testimonies on the walls, it recounts the history of events fundamental to the Archiginnasio. On the eastern side of the courtyard, you can visit the Chapel of St. Mary of the Bulgari. The chapel houses the cycle of the Stories of the Life of the Virgin by the artist Bartolomeo Cesi, one of the greatest exponents of late 16th century figurative culture.
Have we enticed you to find out more about the Archiginnasio? Then book with us!
After your visit you will also have the chance to taste some of the local products, so enjoy an experience of Bologna's architectural and culinary culture and tradition.
