Architect Filippo Brunelleschi designed the Duomo. His distinctive design consists of two domes: an exterior dome made of brick and mortar and an interior one made of sandstone and marble. Surprisingly, the dome was built entirely without the use of scaffolding or other structural supports. Brunelleschi became one of the most significant architects defining the Renaissance Era due to the sheer scale and inventive design.
