The Leaning Tower of Pisa is one of Italy’s most popular tourist attractions. Construction of the building began in 1173 under the supervision of architect Bonanno Pisano. It stands at 60 meters and until 1990 was leaning at about a 10 degree angle. The weight of the tower is approximately 14,500 tonnes and there are 251 steps from the bottom to the top of the Pisa tower. But you’re probably wondering why the Leaning Tower of Pisa leans? Well we have the answer for you.
Once the workers had started working on the second floor in 1178 the building began to sink and construction was put on halt and some experts believe that without this pause, which allowed the soil to settle, the tower would have almost certainly toppled over. However, when builders eventually finished the third floor, the tower tipped 0.2 degrees northwest and as efforts were made to correct the tilt and as it grew its height, the tower ended up leaning one degree to the south. As construction of the tower continued, as did its tilt, engineers tried to counteract the lean by making the upper floors taller on one side, but the additional weight only caused the foundations to sink further. With the addition of a bell-chamber in 1372, the Leaning Tower of Pisa was finally completed. In order to correct the lean and reduce the risk of collapse, engineers tried a number of tricks, including adding lead counterweights to the base and putting scaffolding on the tower’s weakest parts. Thankfully, the tower has managed to remain standing today.
