In Italy, soccer is much more than simply a sport; it's a way of life. Italians will always have a special place in their hearts for soccer.
In 1898, the FIGC, the national soccer association of Italy, was founded. Italians view soccer as more than a sport—they see it as a tradition—with a more than 100-year history. Every year, almost 4 million Italians participate in soccer.
The proud Italian flag and the word "Italia" are displayed across the chest of the blue and white jerseys worn by the Italian national team. Due to their renowned blue outfits, the team earned the nickname "Squadra Azzurra," which translates to "blue squad." Four times, in 1934, 1938, 1982, and 2006, the Squadra Azzurra has won the World Cup. The team now has the second-most wins with four victories, just behind Brazil.
There are 20 teams playing in the professional Italian soccer league, known as Serie A. Italians take great pride in their sports teams, and they are deeply passionate about them. Children grow up following their favourite soccer teams, and with each victory, the players are frequently hailed as heroes.
