Florence is a city rich in history and beauty. Its buildings are definitely one of the most important aspects that keep track of the progress and development of the Florentine center. One of Florence's tourist attractions that can be explored on your own if you have 72 hours to visit the sites of this historic metropolis is Giotto's Campanile. The 414 steps up may seem daunting but they're worth every step when reached top; there aren't any elevators so climb parenthetically to avoid those who have heart conditions or suffer from vertigo/claustrophobia. Please attend to the dress code for the Duomo Complex, which includes covering your shoulders, chest, and knees, or you risk being denied access.
Giotto chose an unusual alignment for his cathedral so that people could see what was then called "the Dome" from afar. This design choice is thought to be one of the main reasons why they were able to complete it before 1336, when construction finally came full circle with Arnolfo's original vision.
The Florence Cathedral has been considered a masterpiece not only because its size makes it visible at any point in town (even if you're miles away) but also largely thanks to Giotto's ahead thinking about how visitors would perceive their surroundings upon entering.
Giotto oversaw the building for three years, focusing almost entirely on the Bell Tower while mostly ignoring the Cathedral's development. He also created and sculpted the lovely relief plaques that line the bottom of the Tower. He built the Tower's foundations and the first level of the Bell tower (the level below the sculptures).
The construction of the Tower was continued after death by assistant Andrea Pisano. He had to remedy several mistakes that Giotto made during foundation and base construction, such as making it too thin for what was planned height with existing walls; but he also shifted some weight into interior chambers inside Bell tower instead so they could bear more burden while still being supported on less surface area than original plans called for - creating an innovative solution which allowed him to finish this project before time ran out!
The Bell Tower is a beautiful piece of architecture that was designed by many people. It's not only based on Giotto, but also features the contributions from Francesco Talenti as well as other architects before him such an organismic design with double windows at different levels and large viewing platforms for bells inside. The pinnacle wasn't completed until much later after his death.
The stained glass windows showcase colorful scenes relating to Christianity while still having abstract imagery like geometric shapes outlining bas reliefs showing important city guilds alongside sculptures representing various saints that line the second level.
