It is possible to reach the top of St. Peter's Basilica. St. Peter's Basilica is one of the most significant domes in the world and was finished in 1547. A memorable experience is getting a close-up look at the dome and its mosaics.
The ascent consists of two sections. There is an elevator and 320 steps in the first flight of stairs. This section takes you right up to the stunning mosaics and a rooftop patio hidden behind the well-known sculptures of Jesus and the Apostles.
For people with claustrophobia, the next portion of the climb is not advised. There are a total of 551 stairs to the summit if you decide to go up. There is a narrow spiral stairway going to the lookout platform near the bottom. You will arrive to St. Peter's Basilica's highest point, which offers one of Rome's and Vatican City's most breathtaking vistas.
