Full Description

Explore the Accademia Gallery, located next to the Accademia delle Belle Arti in Florence, whose history dates back to the second half of the 18th century.

The Galleria dell'Accademia owes its foundation to Leopold II of Habsburg-Lorraine, Grand Duke of Tuscany, who ordered the reorganisation of the Accademia della Belle Arti in Florence, a place of artistic and cultural training for aspiring young artists, including sculptors, painters and architects. The Accademia Gallery is internationally known thanks to the masterpiece of marble sculpture created by the great Michelangelo Buonarroti: the 'David'. It is said that the block of marble used to make the statue was first worked by Agostino Duccio, then Antonio Rossellino, but did not see its completion in sculpture. It was Michelangelo who, by sculpting the block, carved an unprecedented piece of art from it, becoming world-famous. In addition to the 'David', you can dwell on other works by the great sculptor in the Accademia Gallery. But remember that the Accademia is not just Michelangelo, because during your visit you will get to know other painters and sculptors with an innate talent for art, including Maestro della Maddalena, Taddeo Gaddi, Giotto, Lorenzo Monaco, Paolo Uccello and many others. If you happen to be in Florence, don't miss the opportunity to take part in a guided tour of the magnificent Accademia Gallery in Florence.
