Positano

Positano is the pearl and the most famous village on the Amalfi Coast of Italy, located mainly in an enclave in the hills leading down to the coast. This town is on the southern side of the Amalfi coast and is accessible by bus. Positano is often considered to be one of the most picturesque towns on the Amalfi coast and you will not be wondering why when you will front the beautiful coloured houses that line the mountainside.

The beauty of the town structure is best viewed from the sea – if you can, take a boat out and try to take in the whole of Positano from the waters. The view of the houses and mountains is astonishing. The beach of Positano is the perfect place to relax and you can find a plethora of quality cafes, restaurants and bars on the winding streets. This is where you should stop by, while being in Positano:

Santa Maria Church

The Church of St Maria Assunta in Positano is a great representative of Medieval art, whose history was deeply bound with the Benedictine monastery of St Maria. According to the legend the monastery was erected in honor of a Byzantine icon representing the Virgin Mary, which is still venerated by the locals.

Hike The Path Of The Gods

For nature lovers, it is a must-visit spot! It starts from Nocelle up to Bomerano, Agerola and it is called the path of the gods because it takes you among views that feel like heaven. The whole walk takes about four hours and opens a magnificent scenery with unique views of the Amalfi Coast.

Spiaggia Grande

Spiaggia Grande (the grand beach) is the main beach of Positano, perfect for relaxing in the sun or tasting the typical food of the area because there are many good restaurants and bars. In summer, it is the center of the events organized by the municipality of Positano.

Explore The Grottos

The Emerald Cave is a natural phenomenon that is one of the most beautiful caves in the whole of Italy. Located in-between Amalfi and Praiano, the Smeraldo Cave is one of the few caves in the world that is bathed in natural emerald light.

The effect is simply amazing and the colour of the water and the cave itself are gorgeous. You will access the cave via an elevator on the SS163 route and then you can climb on one of the boats for a guided tour of this superb natural subterranean environment.

Take In The View

Sometimes you need to just sit back, relax, and take in the view, and what better place to do it than one of the most picturesque towns in the world? My favourite views of Positano are from the top of the hill, but you can enjoy amazing views from many of the rooftop bars, restaurants, and hotels in the city. Enjoy it!

Amalfi coast in Italian Riviera is a must-visit area.

Amalfi

Amalfi is the main town of the Amalfi Coast and is often inhabited by plenty of tourists. As with the other coastal towns in this region, Amalfi is truly stunning and its plethora of multi-coloured houses and shops are wonderful to behold.

Amalfi is actually larger than most settlements here and due to this fact it has its own cathedral. The front façade of the cathedral is magnificent and covered in an opulent striped stonework pattern. If sight-seeing is not your thing, you can head on down to the promenade, browse through the shops and take a walk along the beach.

Best places to visit in Amalfi

Visit the Amalfi Cathedral and the Cloister of Paradise.

The Cathedral of St. Andrew, Amalfi is a very unique cathedral full of interesting sights. It was built in the early 1200s and it features a dramatic location atop a steep flight of stairs, an Arab-influenced exterior, and the relics of St. Andrew the Apostle in its crypt. Connected to the cathedral is an older basilica that is now converted in a small museum and the fascinating Cloister of Paradise, both containing medieval murals.

Take a walk to explore the town of Amalfi

Amalfi is the main town of this beautiful region and is often inhabited by plenty of tourists. As with the other coastal towns in this region, Amalfi is truly stunning and its plethora of multi-coloured houses and shops are wonderful to behold. Visit Chiostro del Paradiso, to the left of Amalfi’s cathedral porch, these magnificent Moorish-style cloisters, complete with the remnants of 13th-century frescoes, were built in 1266 to house the tombs of Amalfi’s prominent citizens

Visit the town of Sorrento.

The little town of Sorrento (you’ll hear it called Surriento in the local dialect) sits amid lemon and orange groves on the south side of the Bay of Naples, surrounded by craggy cliffs that rise 55 meters above the sea. While you won’t find any of Italy’s top 10 tourist attractions here, Sorrento is worth a stop for its laid-back holiday air, beaches, and its old streets lined by noble houses.

Get lost in the Valle Delle Ferriere behind the city of Amalfi.

The Valle Delle Ferriere is a unique place in this world. It can be easily reached on foot from Amalfi in about an hour. It is nice and cool even in the height of summer thanks to the waterfalls and streams running its length.

The most interesting part is, without a doubt, the Nature Reserve (Riserva Naturale Orientata), to be found at its center. There are two marked trails that lead to this place. The first one starts from Amalfi – Piazza Flavio Gioia (sentiero n. 325), the other one starts from Pontone – Piazza San Giovanni (sentiero n. 323a).

Ravello

If you want the best views of the Amalfi Coast then you must head to Ravello. This town can be found on the top of the mountains in-between Amalfi and Maiori and is much more relaxed and reserved than the other busy tourist locations.

Ravello also has a range of restaurants with outdoor terraces that provide a romantic setting for an evening meal, and the Piazza Centrale is worth a visit to see the Cathedral and the Ravello Art Gallery.

Best places to visit in Ravello

Visit the ”Oscar Niemeyer” Auditorium

The “Oscar Niemeyer” Auditorium is situated a few meters away from Ravello’s center. It is an enormous building that holds about 400 seats and designed by the willing of the Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer who, on the occasion of the “Progetto Ravello”, decided to realize it,.

The Auditorium is divided into three sections: the first one hosts the ‘auditorium’ itself; the second one hosts the parking area; and the third is defined as a “support building’, and there you can find a snack area, a wide staircase, a book shop, and a box office.

The living part of the structure has been equipped with an acoustic system on the measure, with suitable materials and furniture. Outside, it presents a curved line that can look like a woman laying down on her side.

Visit Ravello Cathedral Museum

Villa Rufolo is the main attraction of Ravello – this Roman Villa offers possibly one of the best views available and is a fantastic place to simply relax, enjoy the views and bask in the gorgeous sun.

Among the several historical buildings you can find in Ravello, the Cathedral takes on great importance. It is one of the oldest (ex) cathedrals of Italy, and its first building dates back to 1086.

On the left of the presbytery, you can find a Seventeenth-century chapel, inside of which there is the ampulla with S.Pantaleo‘s blood, that, just like the S.Gennaro‘s one, each year is going to liquefy.

At its inside, there are also two museums: the Opera Museum, situated in the crypt of the church, which recollects some ancient roman urns, some reliquaries of the pre-Christian age and old artifacts; and the gallery of medieval and modern arts.

The Monumental Complex of Villa Rufolo

Villa Rufolo is Ravello’s jewel. It is an elegant and magnificent villa, properly brilliant both from the architectonic and the aesthetic point of view, and it contributes to creating an evergreen beauty, giving this way the chance of being attractive to whoever has passed or is going to pass from there.

As a matter of fact, this is the place which enchanted the musician Wagner, so that he started to think about it as a real meditation refuge. The villa, built by the Rufolos around the thirteenth century, is a great architectonic heritage which still represents the main reason for tourists to come to Ravello.

From this point, it is possible to enjoy a very good view, either towards the sea or towards the mountain.

Villa Cimbrone And Its Gardens

Like Villa Rufolo, also Villa Cimbrone is an old historical building of such great beauty. Today, it is occupied by a 5-star hotel and it is surrounded by such magnificent gardens that can be visited all year.

These ones host inside those that have been defined as “the most beautiful flowers you could imagine” and have mostly been redesigned at the beginning of the Twentieth century.

Inside of these gardens, there is the shady “Viale dell’ Immenso”, it was realized during the first decades of the Seventeenth century and it is covered by a big and long arbor. To reach the Villa, it is possible to access through a pedestrian area on a panoramic small path, made of stairs, at only 10 minutes from Ravello’s center.
